Darwin Deez – Up in the Clouds (Mr Flash Remix)

December 19, 2010

Today, I bring you a fantastic remix of the sprightly single “Up in the Clouds”  from quirk-pop entrepreneurs Darwin Deez – undoubtedly one of this years big success stories. I have great respect for DD, who frolic wildly on the thin line between indie, pop and disco with their penchant for making everything they do sound unique with their strange guitar tunings, yet retaining that poppy vibe making it impossible not to tap your foot or nod your head. Their enthusiasm shows none more so than in their live shows, where Darwin & co interlace their own material with choreographed dance-offs to synth-laden 90s disco megamixes. Which is exactly why I feel this up-beat remix (of what is perhaps already the Deez’s most upbeat song) really hits the spot. It’s by french house DJ Mr Flash (hyped up by DD on their blog) and adds a heavy beat over the song, slowing the verses down giving more space for the big drums and synth to reverberate around your skull, whilst retaining the core elements which make Up in the Clouds so dancable in the first place. Mr Flash is himself picking up some hype, with his Blood Sweat & Tears EP (teaser remix here). I wish I heard stuff like this in discotheques. Kids these days won’t listen to anything!

I was definitely a bit late on the whole Darwin Deez scene, but now a resolute fan. Huge Switchfoot influences going on throughout the album both in vocals and guitar – but that is a whole different discussion. This mix is really nice, like you said, probably their most upbeat tune, taken to another level of upbeatness! Nice find!
