Thieves of Aon – Eskimo Boy
Here’s a great song I stumbled across courtesy of a facebook tip-off. Strange Talk are an indie-dance quartet from Melbourne, Australia, and are currently unsigned. This is a re-hash of their single, ‘Eskimo Boy’, by fellow Aussies Thieves of Aon. The song revolves around a trance-like synth sound and punchy drum beat and bassline. If it sounded Passion Pit-ty to begin with, the Theives version embraces the poppy electro vibe and makes this song fit for the dancefloor. There isn’t much info on either of these artists on the interweb (and to be honest, I’m not even sure what the relationship between Strange Talk and Thieves of Aon is – is it the same band, doing their own remixes?), but I think they are both worth keeping an eye on.

Update: After more searching, I’m still unclear as to who is who. All I know is that Strange Talk have attracted some label attention, and are featured on the Kitsune label sampler CD, and have just one other song available for public consumption, ‘Climbing Walls’.

So this confirms the Thieves of Aon version is indeed a remix, and “Thieves of Aon” is just the remixing guise of Strange Talk. Very confusing!!
Kitsune seem to have a lot of artists that I like (they also have a sweet, if super expensive, clothing line). I should get my hands on one of their sampler CD’s to check out the rest of their roster – some of the artists I like form them are Tom Vek, Simian Mobile Disco, Phoenix, Klaxons (I think – I’m not actually sure I like them – better give them a listen…), Hot Chip, The Drums, Crystal Fighters, Chew Lips, Bloc Party (well, their first album – does anyone like their later stuff?), and I think I will end up liking Cut Copy too. Maybe you should check that last one out Rob, might be up your street.
As for Strange Talk / Thieves of Aon, sounds pretty sweet. Keep us updated, if you can figure out who is who!
I have listened to each of Cut Copy’s 3 albums as they were released, and have never really enjoyed them. But I think I’m right in saying that they really are the “pioneers” of this post-nu-wave genre (or whatever the f- it is), with the likes of Passion Pit and Phoenix (and Strange Talk) following in their footsteps.. or is there someone else leading the field?
That sure is a great label line-up. Except for The Drums who I rate as the most mediocre thing I’ve heard in outside of the UK top 20 singles chart.
The Klaxon’s first album is quite, quite good. I’ve unfortunately played it into the ground waiting for the follow up and was absolutely devastated to find that they had finished it almost 2 years ago and the record company had made them re-record it in its entirety, which says to me it could have been a damn good album. Alas the one that got released is shocking.
Can’t say I have heard of Cut Copy though….will have to have a quick Spotify listen. After the United game of course. 😉
