Battles – Ice Cream

March 24, 2011

Here’s a new song from New York math-rock outfit Battles; Ice Cream.

Battles – Ice Cream (Featuring Matias Aguayo)

Battles wowed us with Atlas, their debut album, back in 2007. It was a fantastic 52-minute brash introduction to “math-rock”, and since then they’ve been busy touring and writing, and as experimental/math rock has become more popular, so has Battles. They’ve appeared on soundtracks to some more mainstream TV programs, computer games, as well as on the Twilight soundtrack of all things.

Last year, guitarist/vocalist Tyondai Braxton left Battles to pursue his solo career. They finally return, now as a three-piece, with ‘Ice Cream’, which follows on from Atlas with its strange timings and vocal warblings. But it definitely has a cheerier edge to it, and a fantastic riff. I like it. They’ve started an advertising campaign for their long-awaited follow up album, titled Gloss Drop, slated for a June 2011 release. It features billboards of what is most definitely going to be the album artwork; a strange pink gummy mess. No word on track listing, or indeed any tracks surfacing other than ‘Ice Cream’. We’ll keep you posted!

And now today I finally remember. I heard it on 6 Music on one of the late shows the day before I moved to Leeds! I remember packing all my crap up and not thinking of getting Shazam out to see who did it because the DJ had gone into epic detail for every bloody band up before this. And of course after this song…nothing. Phew. That was annoying me!!
